Kilimanjaro Mountain

One of the continent’s  magnificent sight, snowcapped and not  yet extinct at 5895 meters above sea level.  This is the highest peak in Africa.  Hiking to the peak, offers varieties of ecosystems of forest, savannah and desert which are homes to the black and white Colobus  monkey, Blue monkey, vibrant  array of exotic birds together with the  hospitable Chagga people.

MARANGU ROUTE ( EASTERN ROUTE)

DAY 1:  MARANGU GATE (1989M) MANDARA HUT (2700M)
Transfer from your lodge to Marangu gate at 1980m.  Hiking at this point is between 3 to 4  hours through the  Montane forest.  Overnight and meals.

DAY 2:  MANDARA HUT (2700M) TO HOROMBO HUT ( 3720M)Traversing the  moorland  desert in the early morning for about 4 hours then overnight and  meals.

DAY 3: HOROMBO HUT
This is the most important day at 3720 meters  above sea level for acclimatization as pressure  rises and temperature lowers.  Hiking hiking for 3 hours through the zebra’s rock to Mawenzi view point; one of the mountain’s summit. Overnight and meals.

DAY 4: HOROMBO(3720M) Hut to KIBO HUT (4200M)
An approximate  of 3-4 hours hiking  time to the Kibo hut, the last stopover before the summit mainly through  the Alpine desert.

DAY 5: SUMMIT ATTEMPT
From Kibo Hut to Han’s Meyer’s  (resting point) at 5150m to Gilman’s point 5681m , then  proceeding to Uhuru peak 5895m.
This portion trekking begins at 24h00 after tea served with biscuits.  Here is where the going  gets tough, as it consist of  a rock path to Hans Meyer’s point followed by the  “zigzag” moves to Gilman’s point of stone creed where you expect snow all the way to the peak.
Notes:The weather condition will determine the duration to be at the peak for  photo graphing before descending  to Kibo hut (4200m) for meals and overnight.

DAY 6: KIBO HUT TO MARANGU GATE
Descending to Marangu  this morning for certification, those who  reach Gilman’s point are awarded with SILVER certificate. And those at Uhuru peak are awarded with GOLD certificates.

MACHAME ROUTE (WESTERN ROUTE)

This is the most scenic albeit steeper route up the mountain in 6 to 7 days.

DAY 1:  MACHAME GATE-MACHAME CAMP
This morning you will have a climb  briefing  at your lodge before transferring to the base camp on  the Western Kilimanjaro near the  volcanic cone which affords superb sundowners and  good view.  Rest, meals and overnight.
Elevation:1800-3000m
Hiking:3-4 hours
Habitat:Montane forest

DAY 2:  MACHAME CAMP –SHIRA CAMP
After heavy breakfast,  trekking off the Montane forest along the Shira plateau, one of  the highest on earth.  Rest, overnight.
Elevation:3000-3950m
Hiking:4-5 hours
Habitat:Moorland desert

DAY 3: SHIRA CAMP TO BARRANCO CAMP AND LAVA TOWER CAMP
Early mornings, proceed steadily over expansive ridgelines of high desert in a striking spot near LAVA TOWER, this serve as an acclimatization day, for first hikers will start feeling  headache, irritation and symptoms of breathlessness  Elevation: 3950m-4600m
Hiking : 4-6 hours
Habitat : Semi desert.

DAY 4: BARRANCO CAMP-BARAFU CAMP
This morning, you will descend into the great Barranco valley then traverse the screed stones to Karanga Valley ( camp) for rest and overnight  definitely the  tough day so far.
Elevation: 3950-4600m.
Hiking: 6 hours
Habitat:Alpine desert

DAY 5: BARAFU CAMP – UHURU PEAK
This day, hiking-begins at 24h00 to the summit between  Rebman and Ratchel glaciers as you head to the North West direction  ascending through the heavy screen towards Stellah point on the crater  rim.  This again is the most challenging portion of the trek.  After a short rest, if lucky enough you will be rewarded with the most magnificent sunrise you are ever to  see while on the mountain. First hikers will see the sunrise from the summit.

DAY 6:UHURU PEAK-MWEKA HUT- MACHAME GATE
Descend from the summit to Mweka  hut for overnight and proceeding to the starting  point (MACHAME GATE) ready for certification the next morning.
